The One (Again) Where She Asks a Favour of You

Remember back when Corinna was entered in a blogging contest and I asked those of you who read this place to go vote for her? Well this is sort of another one of those but it's for a noble and worthwhile cause and all I need from you is a few seconds of your time on a daily basis. Yes, I'm selfish, I want it all. I ask for every day because it's minimal effort and we can all use some Karma points.

Nike is doing something really cool and giving out $5000 grants to deserving community groups to enhance the lives of young people, you can see the actual site explaining it in more detail here and you'll see what an awesome thing it is they're doing.

I ask you to vote for a specific organisation, The StoryBus. I learned of this group through a friend and I was taken with their commitment and goals. You don't have to live in Chicago to know about how had off parts of Chicago are and these people are taking a stand to make a difference. I'm a book dealer's daughter, reading and books have always been such a huge part of my life so this group really touched me in what they're trying to do.

It's grass-roots groups like these that actually do get in and make a difference, break the cycle that living in under-funeded, gang-filled and forgotten areas creates. It's a chance to show kids that tomorrow isn't pre-determined by where you are today. The power of reading and books is a powerful one and anything I can do to help spread the word I'm in for.

I'm not going to go on, you'll stop reading. You can look around the sites and see it for yourself but here's the thing: They need 5000 votes by August 24th to be in it for the $5000 grant. That's doable, that can be achieved.

So please, help out. Take a minute and think back on your favourite book you read as a child or had read to you as a child. Remember how much the book touched you or impacted you and then imagine never having the chance to discover such a book.

Then go vote!
