Way to go, Canada!

DeGrassi: The Next Generation

Along with MI-5, I've become deeply addicted to a teen show, DeGrassi: The Next Generation. It's filmed up in Canada, they have a strict rule about cast members and guests being only from Canada, they're Canada proud and I respect that.

It's a teen show, the cast members are low to mid teens. It's completely the opposite from the American teen shows and it's mind blowing. I know nothing about tv in Canada, I've heard it's big but I don't know.

This show dives head first into serious shit. In the short time I've been watching we've had an openly gay Hispanic kid who is beaten by bashers on the street, has an open relationship with a rocker and is generally accepted. We've had a prof with leukemia and a kid who steals the dying man's laptop. We've had a school shooting ending in death. We've had girlfriend beating resulting in a coma. Drug addiction, parental abandonment, alcohol, car theft, it's ALL there.

And not a second of it is hokey. Unlike American tv, these kids are not all gorgeous and fake, you can really believe these are the kids around you in the school in your town. Issues are dealt with just like real people would deal and they don't always end happy. It's the best-done teen show on tv today, too bad not everyone can see it.

DeGrassi started back in the 80's, it was a big hit mid 80's. Turns out Kevin Smith was a huge fan and had a crush on one of the actresses. Kevin Smith will be the first American to ever do a guest shot on the new DeGrassi, which is pretty cool.

All in all, this show rocks.

  1. Yes, it does rock. I miss it and, since you said you didn’t know, DeGrassi is huge up there - and deservedly so. smile
